Economic genes?

Research has shown, that an average dairy cow has a productive period of only 1 year and 10 months (Centre for Danish agriculture, 2010). In my world, that is nothing less than a disaster. Fortunately, the genetic researchers Fogh and Kargo have calculated that the productivity on dairy farms is doing very well, thanks to the increasing genetic potential over the last 10 years (magazine Kvæg, January 2012).
But is there really such a big relationship between genetics and economy? The same research from 2010 showed also, that 30% of all first calving cows, the ones with the best genes according to Fogh and Kargo, never get a second calf. Maybe researchers are satisfied with that, but should the dairy farmers also settle for that?
Of course, the answer is NO! Raising a heifer cost ca. 10.500 dkk. This amount is all inclusive, also labour and fixed costs (source: Peder Helms, Lemvigegnens agriculture association). An average Holstein dairy with 150 cows needs 60 heifers each year, these cost 630.000 dkk. Eighteen of those 60 heifers will never get a calf again, a tremendous waste of money and resources!
Maybe we should start to focus more on durable cows with few physical weaknesses, instead of fast genetic progress? When we can reduce the loss of young cows, will more cows reach fourth lactation where their peak lactation production actually can be achieved? This will reduce costs for raising young stock and the average production of the herd will increase. A cull-rate of 25 % isn’t impossible and is also seen in practice. The dairy from the example would in that case only need 38 heifers and save 230.000 dkk!
When cows have the necessary physical qualities and we offer them good circumstances, can the productivity in the dairy industry really increase? To learn more about which physical qualities I’m thinking of, one can read in the aAa manual (see www.aAa-vejledning.dk). My request to researchers and other index-fixating persons is: Stop talking so much about genetic progress. Increasing durability can generate much more money than a few points less or more NTM-index.
